Be SMART About Your Singing Goals
A successful musical career requires more than talent and training—it requires clear planning and consistent action. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced performer, setting realistic goals gives your singing journey direction, purpose, and motivation. Without a plan, it’s easy to lose focus and progress more slowly.
Start by setting SMART goals—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Beginners may focus on improving breath support and pitch, while experienced singers might work on vocal expression, stage presence, or expanding their repertoire. Rather than saying, “I want to sing better,” set a goal such as practising vocal exercises for 30 minutes a day or learning two new songs each month.
Consistency is what transforms goals into results. Establish a regular practice routine, record your performances to monitor progress, and identify areas that need improvement. Working with an experienced vocal coach like Deirdre can provide personalised feedback, targeted vocal training, and a structured programme designed around your goals.
Performance experience is equally important. Participate in school events, local competitions, open mic nights, recitals, or online performances to build confidence and connect with audiences. Every performance strengthens your skills and develops your stage presence.
Don’t overlook vocal health. Stay hydrated, get enough sleep, warm up properly, and avoid habits that strain your voice. Looking after your instrument is essential for consistent performance and a long-lasting singing career.
Most importantly, be patient with yourself. Every successful singer experiences setbacks, challenges, and moments of self-doubt. View each obstacle as an opportunity to learn, celebrate every milestone, and remember that steady, consistent progress leads to lasting success.

This Is For You, Mum
From my very first performance as a child to stages across Europe, America, and India, performing at Carnegie Hall has been the culmination of decades of dedication and hard work. Sharing that stage alongside remarkable musicians was an incredibly humbling experience, and throughout it all, I could imagine you, mum standing proudly beside me. I owe so much of who I am to you.
My heartfelt thanks to Sound Espressivo, the New York Chamber Players, Maestro Giacomo Franci, my coaches, family, and friends for making this unforgettable milestone possible.
