Training with Deirdre – Why It Matters
Singing isn’t just stringing scales together to produce a song. It is a lifelong mastery that requires years—often decades—of dedicated practice. “But singers can start their journey at any time,” shares Deirdre Lobo, international concert artist and vocal coach. “What matters is learning the right vocal technique from a coach who truly understands your voice.”
Experience Counts
As the daughter of India’s only Opera Diva, the late Celia Lobo, Deirdre grew up immersed in music, surrounded by her mother’s soulful arias. She pursued her academic training with extensive studies in Vocal Performance at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. She later earned a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Colorado, USA, followed by a Graduate Performance Diploma from the Peabody Conservatory of Music at the Johns Hopkins Institute, Maryland, USA.
Alongside her academic credentials, Deirdre trained under several distinguished mentors. In Manila, Katherine Sternberg taught her the value of discipline, practice-based structure, humility, and the art of collaboration. “I learned to make the most of the opportunities given to me and to work relentlessly toward success,” Deirdre shares.
Marilyn Zschau helped her discover how to sing with effortlessness, while Voltaire Verzosa refined that foundation through detailed work on vocal technique. “The combination of all my teachers, including my current teacher have & continue to shape me—not just as a singer, but as the artist, teacher, and mentor I am today,” she adds.

The Deirdre Difference
Deirdre’s strong technical foundation under various masters gives her a unique ability to coach diverse voices and meet individual needs. She emphasizes that understanding technique is essential for producing a balanced, healthy sound. “A strong foundation is the building block of any successful endeavor,” she explains. “Breath control, posture, vocal placement, resonance, diction, and healthy vocal production help prevent long-term vocal issues.”
In her classes, establishing proper breath flow is paramount. “Learning to control airflow can dramatically improve tone, range, and stamina. I help students develop flexibility and strength gradually, without rushing their progress.”
With decades of experience, Deirdre can quickly identify technical issues and guide students toward healthier alternatives through targeted exercises. Each session helps singers uncover weaknesses, build confidence, and explore their full vocal potential. Her expertise spans multiple genres, including Pop, Jazz, Classical, Bollywood, R&B, and Broadway, and her performance background helps students shine on stage.
Importantly, Deirdre also mentors vocal teachers. With over 40 years of teaching experience, she helps educators solve daily challenges through practical solutions and real-world anecdotes, enabling them to connect with students individually and achieve clear goals.
Her impact is reflected in her students’ voices. Gaurav describes studying with Deirdre as an eye-opening experience: “She gave me clarity when I hit a wall. Even the language she used opened new ways of understanding vocal technique.” Seasoned Baritone Farzan Khotwal found her workshops “positive and encouraging,” noting that she provided essential tools to unlock Schumann’s repertoire.
Former student Veera Saxena also credits her training with meaningful progress in her vocal journey—proof that the right guidance can truly transform a voice.
